Son of Cthonia: from ganger to First Captain
Firstborn son of ganglord Tarkeraddon, Abaddon refused the ritual of killing his brothers, slew his father and went into exile. The Luna Wolves found the giant of the Cthonian wastes. Hastur Sejanus brought him to Horus — who gave him a coin. Thus began the path of the Great Crusade's finest blade.

The Crimson Path: why 13 Crusades?
The "Abaddon lost 12 times" meme is Imperial propaganda. Every Crusade had a hidden goal: a relic, an alliance, destruction of Blackstone pylons holding the Eye shut. 10th — pact with Perturabo for a warp route. 12th — seizure of Blackstone Fortresses in the Gothic War.

Pylons on Cadia and a dozen worlds — Necron work that dampened the warp. For millennia Abaddon broke them with the Planet Killer and agents. The Imperium celebrated "victories" while the Warmaster picked the locks of reality one by one. Culmination — Cadia.

Since 2003 (Liber Chaotica) and especially 2017 (Gathering Storm) GW revealed: the Crusades were victories with secret goals, not failed charges at Terra. The 2019 Jes Goodwin model killed the meme forever: huge, with Drach'nyen and the Talon, standing on fallen heroes. Today Abaddon is 40k's most successful villain.
